Pressure Washer Downstream Injector

A downstream injector works only when its internal flow class and the complete downstream hose/nozzle system create the right hydraulic conditions. This page separates injector sizing from chemical dilution and includes a calculator based on measured draw—not an advertised ratio.

Size the injector by flow—and measure the real draw

Downstream injectors depend on water flow, internal orifice, downstream back pressure and the complete hose/nozzle system. A retailer's advertised “10:1” or “20%” should not replace a measured draw test on your machine.

Where a downstream injector belongs

General Pump's installation literature places a downstream injector after the regulator/unloader and pump. The injector body has a flow-direction arrow and must be installed in that direction. Chemical is pulled through a hose barb into the water stream only when downstream pressure is low enough for the venturi to create suction.

This is different from upstream soap injection, where chemical enters before the pump. Keeping the chemical downstream avoids sending the detergent through the pump, but it does not make every chemical safe for the hose, gun, fittings or surfaces being cleaned.

Measured downstream dilution calculator

Run a controlled draw test using water in the pickup container when appropriate for your setup. Why long hose and the nozzle can stop chemical draw

Downstream injection is sensitive to pressure after the injector. General Pump's technical guidance says downstream injectors require low pressure to activate chemical flow, and its ROBOKIM instructions specify a low-pressure spray tip and warn that the injector will not draw above a higher downstream-pressure threshold. A long hose, restrictive fittings or an undersized low-pressure tip can therefore change the result.

If a system draws properly with a short hose but not a long setup, do not automatically install a smaller injector. Verify the injector flow class, hose size, low-pressure nozzle and complete downstream path first. The Nozzle Guide explains why orifice restriction changes pressure.

The calculator measures solution ratio—not chemical safety

If the test reports 10 parts water to 1 part pickup solution, that describes the hydraulic draw at the test condition. The pickup solution may itself already be diluted, and the chemical manufacturer's label can specify a different use concentration or prohibit pressure-washer application. Treat label directions and SDS requirements as authoritative.

What is a downstream injector on a pressure washer?

A downstream injector introduces detergent after the pump, usually between the unloader/pump outlet and the high-pressure hose. This keeps the chemical out of the pump while using low downstream pressure to create suction at the injector.

How do I choose the right downstream injector size?

Match the injector to the pressure washer flow range, rated pressure/temperature, inlet/outlet connections and chemical compatibility. General Pump publishes separate injector flow ranges such as 1–2, 2–3, 3–5 and 5–8 GPM; a physically identical-looking injector can have a different internal orifice.

Why will my downstream injector draw soap only with the black nozzle?

Downstream injectors require low downstream/back pressure to create suction. General Pump documentation notes that its injectors draw at low pressure and may stop drawing above a higher back-pressure threshold. Long hose, restrictive fittings, undersized or wrong nozzles and other downstream restrictions can affect chemical draw.

How do I calculate my actual downstream dilution ratio?

Measure how much water passes through the system during a timed test and how much chemical solution leaves the injector pickup container during the same interval. The embedded calculator converts those measured volumes into water-to-chemical parts and the chemical fraction of the combined downstream solution.

Can I use any chemical through a downstream injector?

No. Follow the pressure-washer, injector and chemical manufacturers. Use tubing, seals and wetted materials compatible with the chemical, and never use the calculator to override a product label, safety data sheet or prohibited pressure-washer chemical guidance.
